Trees planted

We recognise the vital importance of tree planting in restoring our planet's health.

Partnering with Ecologi, we are committed to implementing tree planting as an essential element in both ecological restoration and community regeneration.

Tasks to Trees at inndio

inndio's commitment to reforestation is deeply rooted in the personal experiences of our founder, Dan Lee. As a child, Dan spent time in rural Malawi, Africa, and witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of tree planting on both the environment and the local community.

“Tragically, the village where we lived faced severe deforestation. The hillside nearby, once lush with trees, had been stripped bare by villagers who needed firewood to support their families. During the rainy season, the exposed soil on the hillside would wash away under the harsh rains, as there was nothing left to hold it together. Recognising this environmental crisis, my family collaborated with the local village chief and residents to replant trees on the hillside. This initiative wasn't just about planting trees; it was about restoring the land and preventing soil erosion. Decades have passed since then, and those trees continue to thrive, playing a crucial role in supporting the local ecology and meeting the community's needs.”

This experience has profoundly influenced inndio's approach to reforestation, underscoring the importance of community involvement and the long-term benefits of restoring natural landscapes. It serves as a constant reminder of the power of collaborative efforts in making a lasting environmental impact.

Ecologi focuses on responsible reforestation, including selecting ecologically suitable tree species and planting them in optimal locations. They actively engage with local communities, understanding their needs and insights, to make the tree planting initiatives more effective and beneficial for all.

Ecologi prioritises the protection of trees from both natural and human-made threats. Their aim is not just to plant trees but to nurture them so they can significantly contribute to biodiversity and carbon sequestration. This approach embodies our dedication to a greener, more sustainable future, with Ecologi as our partner in this journey.

No. The trees we plant for each completed design task take time to reach their full potential in carbon sequestration.

Young trees, especially in their initial years, aren't capable of absorbing significant amounts of carbon. Additionally, many verification programmes typically recognise and verify carbon removal only when trees reach about a decade in age. For this reason, we don't count these trees in offsetting your design footprint.

Nevertheless, these trees continuously and gradually absorb carbon, contributing to environmental betterment at their own growing pace.

Central to Ecologi's collaboration with reforestation partners is their commitment that goes beyond merely planting trees. These partners are entrusted with not only planting the trees but also nurturing them, ensuring they have the optimal conditions to grow and flourish.

To maintain transparency and accountability, these partners are required to submit detailed reports regularly. These reports include the number of trees planted, descriptive progress updates, and GPS-tagged photographs of the planting sites. Additionally, the data provided by Ecologi's tree planting partners undergo regular audits by independent third parties to validate the accuracy of their reported figures. This rigorous monitoring ensures that our reforestation efforts are effective and sustainable.

Absolutely. We firmly believe in the importance of biodiversity and ecological balance in our reforestation efforts. We steer clear of monocultures and the introduction of non-native species, aligning with Ecologi's values of responsible reforestation.

For instance, in Madagascar alone, planting sites feature an impressive variety of around 60 different native tree species, including:

  • Avicinia marina
  • Rhizophora mucronata
  • Ceriops tagal
  • Bruguiera gymnorhiza
  • Rhopalocarpus similis

These diverse species not only enhance the local ecosystem but also ensure a healthier, more resilient environment.

We prioritise the protection and inclusion of indigenous communities in our reforestation efforts. Ecologi collaborates only with partners who have well-established and inclusive processes for coordinating and consulting with local communities prior to starting any planting activities.

A key aspect of Ecologi's approach is to meticulously monitor the additional benefits of our projects, ensuring they not only support but actively incorporate local communities. This involvement ranges from addressing issues related to land ownership and access to directly engaging local residents through employment or training initiatives.

Ecologi's reforestation partners typically employ two main methods:

Employ-to-Plant: This approach involves hiring local individuals to plant trees, thereby providing them with employment opportunities.

Train-to-Plant: In this method, local community members are trained on-site to plant and care for trees themselves.

These strategies serve dual purposes: they empower local communities to be active participants in and beneficiaries of the reforestation projects, fostering a sense of ownership, and they create sustainable income sources for these communities.
